MUSAC Appoints New Director

The Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Government of Castilla and León, Alicia García, announced the appointment of Manuel Oliveira as new director of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC, León). The fourth person to be appointed to the position in the ten years of the Museum's existence, Oliveira replaces Eva González-Sancho, who renounced the post on June 3, after only three months on the job.

The Asociación de Directores de Arte Contemporáneo de España (ADACE) connected González-Sancho's decision to leave the post with a "lack of artistic and administrative autonomy."

Manuel Oliveira will become the fourth person to occupy the position of Director of the Museo, as he follows on the steps of Rafael Doctor (2005-2009), Agustín Pérez-Rubio (2009-2013) and the short-lived tenure of Eva González-Sancho (March–June, 2013).

Born in La Coruña in 1964, the new Director of the Museum has a degree in Art History from the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela and a degree in Fine Arts from the Universidad de Barcelona. He is a visual artist, curator and art critic. Between 1998 and 2001 he directed the Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporáneo (CGAC). Between 2001 and 2005, Oliveira headed the Centre de Producció d'Arts Visuals (HANGAR) in Barcelona. Then he once again took over the directorship of the CGAC, this time from December of 2005 to June of 2009.
