Nosotras… de la sin razón venidas

Nosotras… de la sin razón venidas, a female point of view based on works by female artists from the Museo de Artes Visuales and Galería Gabriela Mistral collections. October 22nd, December 27th Santiago de Chile, Chile This exhibition started with a call for submissions from curators, made by the Museo de Artes Visuales (MAVI) and Galería Gabriela Mistral (GGM) in 2014. Nosotras… de la sin razón venidas ("We, who come from unreason"), the entry submitted by Germany-based Cuban art critic Dermis León, was selected as the winner. León's exhibition brings together 24 female artists, in her own words, "to explore whether it is possible to tell a story of Chilean art without any of the male figures on the basis of whom aesthetics, discourses, and ways of 'reading' the country's art have been built during the Pinochet regime and afterwards". In this way, León's exhibition discourse is situated in the female experience, through works by Magdalena Atria, Natalia Babarovic, Gracia Barrios, Julen Birke, Roser Bru, Martha Colvin, Patricia Domínguez, Josefina Fontecilla, Francisca García, Nury González, Voluspa Jarpa, Klaudia Kemper, Alicia Lillo, María Mohor, Pancha Núñez, Matilde Pérez, Norma Ramírez, Lotty Rosenfeld, Julia Toro, Bruna Truffa, Cecilia Vicuña, Lorena Villablanca, Alicia Villareal, and Ingrid Wildi. The artist's works come from the MAVI and GGM collections, two institutions with differing approaches to contemporary art collecting in Chile. "The former from the private sector, and the latter, under the tutelage of governments", the curator says. Nevertheless, Dermis León achieved her goals despite such diversity, and was able to create four curatorial lines that position a set of female artists within the narrative of Chilean art. These lines, integrated into the MAVI space, are: "The formal impulse, deconstructing abstraction"; "Critique of Painting"; "Critical Memory"; and "Sense and Sensibility". Nosotras... de la sin razón venidas finds its inspiration and its title in Almácigo, Gabriela Mistral posthumous book. From a female point of view, the curator brings together Chilean artists to contribute to the dialogue and new reading of well-known works, now in a new set of relationships.
