Annual Night of Museums

Once every year almost 50 museums and art spaces stay open through the night in Dusseldorf, Germany. More than 200 events associated with the visual arts are planned for the enjoyment of the local and international public.

The first Night of Museums was held in Berlin in 1997 as an initiative from a large number of cultural institutions and exhibition spaces. This night of museums has become increasingly more important throughout the year among the multitude of art lovers in Germany because it represents an interesting alternative to the other nocturnal and cultural activities that the city has to offer. The concept of an entire night dedicated to walking through the city's art spaces has been well received by other important cities across Europe, including: Cologne, Kassel, Amsterdam, Basel, Zürich, Budapest, Prague and Belgrade, among others.

Twenty-five thousand art enthusiasts are expected to attend the 13th edition of the Night of Museums in Dusseldorf this coming April 20 of 2013. The 2012 edition of the event attracted 24,000 visitors, nearly 1,000 more than the year before. An important element of the event is that only one ticket is required to have access to all the events, while public transportation around the city is free on this night. Ticket sales begin by the end of March.

Supported by Düsseldorf Marketing & Tourism GMBH, the event includes temporal and permanent exhibitions in museums and galleries, as well as outdoor installations and performances, among other activities.
