Navigating the Waves: Contemporary Cuban Photography

Navigating the Waves: Contemporary Cuban Photography will be presented at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston from Sunday, September 29 through August 3, 2025.
The exhibition addresses the evolution of photography in Cuba from 1960 to the 2010s. From a contemporary perspective, it reflects on this medium as a promoter of Fidel Castro's Cuban Revolution in 1959, to its commitment to social and political criticism in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the following years Cuban photographers constructed work that explored identity, the body, the spirit, African heritages, customs and the limits of society. This, within a context of changing cultural prescriptions and policies.
“Navigating the Waves: Contemporary Cuban Photography” invites viewers to gain a broader understanding of Cuba and its culture. It features more than 100 images and celebrates the acquisition of some 300 photographs from the Madeleine and Harvey Plonsker Collection in Chicago.
