Museum Art Center Buenos Aires (MACBA)

A new exhibition space will open in Buenos Aires by the end of 2011, with the goal of promoting, selecting, and studying Twentieth and Twenty-First Century art. The space was conceived of by art collector Aldo Rubino and curator Constanza Cerullo, who named the project Museum Art Center Buenos Aires (MACBA). The promoters of this idea have selected a site in the San Telmo neighborhood, which is located mid-way between La Boca and the newly developed section of Puerto Madero. It will be near the Museo del Cine and the Museo de Arte Moderno in Buenos Aires (MAMBA). Therefore, it is expected to be assimilated naturally into the new Polo Cultural Sur, a project by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires to stimulate citizen participation and tourism. The new MACBA will have an expansion of 12,917 square feet across four levels that are of equal size and will serve for holding events that will showcase Argentine and international artists. The ground floor will house temporary exhibitions, a cafeteria, and bookshop. The permanent collection will be shown on the first floor. The upper floors will be equipped with private access areas and all kinds of amenities and will be leased as office space. Two underground floors will house an auction room and storage space. Currently developing its activities virtually through the internet, MACBA has announced its next call for young artists. This will award the winner with an exhibition of his/her work at the new building once it is completed. According to the promoters, the space will also showcase works by artists such as Antonio Berni, León Ferrari, Kcho, Guillermo Kuitka, Jaume Plensa, Víctor Vasarely, and Zhang Peng, among others.
