The Museo Reina Sofía and the Cisneros Foundation / Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection have established a long-term alliance, through which they will jointly develop a variety of cultural projects.
The formal launching of the alliance was preceded by an international symposium on Latin American art, held in March. Titled Repensar los modernismos latinoamericanos: Flujos y desbordamientos, the symposium took place in the Museo Reina Sofía's auditorium 400, with critics, artists, curators, and international specialists approaching issues connected to modern Latin American art and the mutual influence between the region and Europe in different temporal and cultural realms.
In 2013, and as an ongoing event, the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection will present in the Madrid museum works from the decades between 1940 and 1970. These temporal ranges will bring to the fore the formal and technical shifts operated in Latin American abstract art beyond European and North American proposals. Among the important artists included in this exhibition are Cruz-Diez, Gego, Soto, Mira Schendel, Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, Joaquín Torres-García, Tomás Maldonado, and Gyula Kosice.
As a final act, the Cisneros Foundation / Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection will make a temporary loan of an important selection of its holdings to the museum.
