The Museo del Prado can't account for the whereabouts of 885 works of art, according to information released by the Accounts Tribunal in recent days. As El País reports, the number of lost artworks was even greater some years ago: between 2008 and December, 2012, the Warehouse Service located 41 of the 926 items that were at some point listed as "not found". Their misplacement and later recovery was attributed to the "reordering of collections" with the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. Twelve works of at "were deposited in various institutions" says the report of the overseeing organism with respect to the year 2012. Several lots that appear as missing may belong to the collection of Museo de la Trinidad, collected and resulting from expropriation carried out during the Mendizábal deamortization. Historically, the museum has acknowledged the loss of 350 canvases in the 1980s, and 500 works may have been destroyed or lost in the 1990s. Concerned, the Tribunal insists on continuing with the search for lots that are recorded in old inventories, and emphasizes the importance for the museum to follow up its research of works loaned to other institutions. Yearly, Museo del Prado organizes a variety of exhibitions and supports the travel of others around the world. According to El País, in 2012 El Prado participated in 15 exhibitions in Spain—some were held in more than one site—, to which it sent 176 works of art. Abroad, the museum was involved in 33 exhibitions, with 288 works. In the case of El Prado Itinerante, which the museum organizes in collaboration with other institutions, 164 works of art were sent to three exhibitions. The information also notes that a plan of action is being created for the period 2013-2016, including the on-site review of works deposited in several different communities and an analysis of their sate, condition, safety, and access. The Law under which Museo del Prado operates mandates it to "ensure the integrity and safety of collections and museum funds", and to "guarantee the protection and conservation" of all assets of the Spanish historical patrimony under its purview.
