In the news for the last few weeks, in social media and in publications such as The New York Times, there has been information about a legal battle between Margarita Aguilar, former director of El Museo del Barrio and the institutions Board. Aguilar alleges gender discrimination and general hostility on the part of the Board, and the Board states that Aguilar was dismissed for reasons of poor performance.
Aguilar's suit, filed with the Human Rights section of the State of New York according to The New York Times, expresses concern that she was told to lose weight and dress differently, and that her ability to hire and fire employees was undermined by the Board.
On its part, the Board explained that Aguilar's dismissal was due, among other reasons, to her insufficient fundraising, inefficient leadership, and unfulfilment of duties.
