The Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá reaches its 50th anniversary, and as part of the celebration it is presenting La Colección, an anthology exhibition of its efforts in the art field that brings to the public nearly 500 artworks between sculptures, prints, paintings, and photographs.
The museum, established in 1963 by Argentine-born historian and critic Marta Traba, has been headed since 1970 by Gloria Zea. In these five decades, it has sustained an interest in promoting the visual arts through exhibitions and appreciation workshops, among other activities. It has presented nearly 800 exhibitions.
The anniversary show will be divided into the following chapters:
- Academy, modernism, and landscape, in the Carlos Haime gallery.
- History of photography, in the JN Gómez Múltiple gallery.
- International Graphic Arts, in the Múltiple gallery.
- A selection of Colombian and Latin American art from the 1960s, in the Marta Traba gallery.
- A selection of hyper-realist drawings, expressionist figurative works, and a selection of works that participated in the Atenas Salons, in the Drawing room.
- Recent works, in the Carlos Rojas gallery.
The museum is also announcing an expansion, planning to inaugurate its new 17,500-square meter building next year. The annex will be connected to the current site and will feature exhibition galleries, a sculpture patio, a bookstore, auditorium, cafeteria, restaurant court, library, offices, and two underground parking levels. It is expected that this new building will house the museum's permanent collection, comprised of more than 3,000 works by national and foreign artists.
