Dallas Museum of Art Appoints First Curator of Latin American Art

On August 27, 2019, Agustín Arteaga—Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) Eugene McDermott director—announced his appointment of Dr. Mark A. Castro as the museum’s first Jorge Baldor Curator of Latin American Art. With more than a decade of experience as curator, scholar, and educator of Latin American art, Dr. Castro's appointment signals a new dynamic chapter in the DMA's collection, presentation, and study of Latin American art. Dr. Castro began at the DMA on September 3.

The Jorge Baldor Curator of Latin American Art position was established through a multiyear gift from Jorge Baldor, an entrepreneur and civic leader based in Dallas. In conjunction with this newly created position—focusing on art from North America, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, and spanning from viceroyalty times to the modern centuries—early this year the DMA announced the establishment of a fund for the acquisition of Latin American art, as well as the addition of five works by key Latin American artists to the museum's collection.

“The launch of this new curatorship, along with visionary gifts from very generous local sponsors and collectors of new works to the collection, as well as the inauguration of a new fund dedicated to increasing it in the future, mark an exciting new chapter in the life of the museum and its presentation of Latin American art,” Arteaga remarked. “As the DMA develops this strengthened base, I am delighted to welcome Dr. Mark Castro to his new position. Dr. Castro's combination of museum experience, academic contributions, and educational background uniquely positions him to create experiences that provoke reflection and participation in our public spaces, and are linked to the DMA's outstanding collection of Latin American art. With Latino and Latin American culture embedded in the fabric of Dallas, as well as the United States, the DMA’s strength in Latin American art is a key element for expanding the museum’s exhibitions and programs to represent the diverse histories and cultures of our audiences, locally and nationally, and to serve as a welcoming place for all,” he added.

Dr. Castro holds a M.A. and Ph.D. in art history from Bryn Mawr University in Pennsylvania, and a B.A. in archaeology and studio art from Hamilton University in New York.
