Chile's Museum Of Contemporary Art Announces A New Director

The Museum of Contemporary Art recently announced its new director, Daniel Cruz Valenzuela (1975), a visual artist, scholar, and researcher at the Universidad de Chile. Cruz, who has served as Scholar Director of the Faculty of Arts, holds a Master's degree in Arts from the Universidad de Chile with postgraduate studies in New York, United States. He has participated in creative and research residencies in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Punta Arenas, Chile; Goiás and Salvador de Bahía, Brazil and New York, USA. Daniel Cruz has developed a vast trajectory at the Universidad de Chile, with diverse transversal projects that seek to explore the frontiers, gaps, and overflows of contemporary art and its relationship with knowledge creation.
Currently, Cruz teaches the Central Photography Workshop in the Department of Visual Arts and the Project Workshop in the Master's Degree in Media Arts at the Graduate School of the Faculty of Arts. He also lectures in the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
"The professor of the Faculty of Arts and artist Daniel Cruz has had an important commitment to the cause of the University in terms of community and institution, which has been expressed in the positions he has held. Added to these conditions is his personal work that takes place in an area of tremendous contemporaneity, with a remarkable vocation for the future, such as the link between the arts and the world of design, information technology, and digital transformation. This will be one of the many aspects of Professor Daniel Cruz's experience and trajectory that will guarantee that the MAC will continue to be, as it has been with Francisco Brugnoli, at the forefront of art," said Ennio Vivaldi, Chancellor of the Universidad de Chile.
One of Daniel Cruz's first tasks will be to prepare for the reopening of both MAC venues, which have been closed since March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The resumption of on-site exhibitions is scheduled for the second half of 2021 and will be carried out following the current security measures and protocols. In parallel, the new director will lead the virtual MAC project: Management and renovation of virtual platforms to initiate new museologies, made possible thanks to the awarding of a National Fondart, Visual Arts line, applied for by the museum team. This fund starts a process of production, dissemination, and mediation that strengthens the MAC's online program. Among others, it contemplates the digitization of the museum's collection and historical archive and the management of new digital museologies to stimulate the experience of web browsing and learning from contemporary art.
