Mural by Carmen Herrera in East Harlem

Carmen Herrera: a large-scale exterior mural has been planned for Manhattan East School for Arts and Academics, in East Harlem. The initiative was announced by Publicolor, an arts and education nonprofit. The mural which will be titled "Uno Dos Tres," is an adaptation of her 1987 painting “Diagonal.”
The mural aims to, as Publicolor founder Ruth Lande Shuman said, "... bring the power of visual beauty to neighborhoods where there is very little and where parents are just not taking their kids to museums.”
The project will involve the students in the mural installation, 54-foot wide and 17-foot tall, on their school building.
The Cuban artist said she is very proud to offer this image to Spanish Harlem, where many of them are Spanish-speaking like her. She added: "I selected several images and then reduced my choices to one that would best suit the specific site and, most importantly, that would challenge and motivate the students who are making it.”
