"Borders" video art exhibition at the Instituto Cultural de México

The Instituto Cultural de México in Miami (ICM) inaugurated the video art exhibition titled "Borders," a selection of videos shown in the Biennial of the Frontiers, curated by Othón Castañeda. The show will remain open to the public until August 22, 2016.

In the same vein of the Biennial of the Frontiers, the exhibition explores the concept of borders, territorial demarcations, based on the free interpretations of 9 artists. They establish a dialogue from the perspective of their particular contexts through the technical possibilities offered by video art. The participating artists are: Bruno Goosse (Belgium), Carlos Ruiz-Valarino (Puerto Rico), Cristiana De Marchi (Italy), Emilio Chapela (Mexico), Heliodoro Santos (Mexico), Julio M. Romero (Mexico), Maya Yadid (Israel), Miguel Ángel Ortega (Mexico), Tania Ximena Santos (Mexico).

While some of the videos show actual national borders, others explore those divisions as artificial processes that, nonetheless, lead to the construction of identities. The idea behind the exhibition is to geometrically and literally revise the physical barriers that attempt to fragment the continuous economic, social, and cultural flow between countries. It also questions the idealization imaginary or past paradises characterized for their apparent statism and immobility. The exhibition stands out for the visual reflection of female artists that use multicultural elements and migration to propose the constant and transforming weave that defines the notions of humanity, nation, and identity.
