Carioca Exhibition: Impurity as Myth

After its successful presentation at the Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM Rio) in Rio de Janeiro, the show entitled Carioca Exhibition: Impurity as Myth will be on display at Casa das Onze Janelas in Bélem, from July 26 to September 21, and at the Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura in Fortaleza, from October 8 to November 30, 2014. Curated by Luiz Camilo Osorio and Marta Mestre—curators of the MAM Rio —the exhibition includes 56 works by artists who use Rio de Janeiro as their source of inspiration for their productions. The works belong to the MAM's collection and to the collections of Gilberto Chateaubriand and Joaquim Paiva that have been loaned to the museum. The exhibition in Belém includes works from the collection of the Museu das Onze Janelas. According to the curators "The borderless sense of the carioca spirit, where the local and the global draw from, share challenges and interests, allowed for the incorporation of works from the collection of the Museu das Onzae Janelas that strengthen this institutional collaboration." "The exhibition does not pretend to 'thematize' Rio, but rather to reveal the degree to which the city was, and continues to be, a chaotic and creative space in which an artistic diversity that combines improvisation and rigorousness is encouraged. From the end of Modernism, through Concretism, Neo-Concretism, Pop and Conceptualism, the exhibition reaches the contemporary period with works that address the 'carioca spirit,' consciously or unconsciously, conceived from the perspective of a local artistic production whose global projection is strengthened by the show." The exhibition includes works created with a variety of techniques and supports, like sculpture, installation, painting, design and photography. Several emblematic works, including two Metaesquemas (Metaschemes, 1957) and five Parangóles by Hélio Oiticica, as well as the aluminum work Bicho (Bug, 1960) by Lygia Clark. The most recent works are serigraphies on canvas like the 2013 pieces Cangaço/Xô Choque and Cangaço/Todo Poder à Praia! by the artist group Opavivará (Rio de Janeiro, 2005). Among the notable works that will be displayed is Objetos para Tampar o Sol de Seus Olhos (Objects to Cover the Sun from his Eyes, 2011) by Paulo Nazareth. According to the curators "The works were selected after taking into consideration their ability to reinvent the idea of Rio de Janeiro and its urban everyday life as a space for cultural experiences." The artists participating in the exhibition are: Luiz Alphonsus, Antonio Manuel, Felipe Barbosa, Cabelo, Marcos Cardoso, Aluísio Carvão, Marcos Chaves, Lygia Clark, Paulo Climachauska, Raymundo Colares, Daniela Dacorso, José Damasceno, Osmar Dillon, Iole de Freitas, Rubens Gerchman, Alair Gomes, Kátia Maciel, Lia Menna Barreto, Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Pape, Glauco Rodrigues, Ione Saldanha, Daniel Senise, Gustavo Speridião, Evandro Teixeira, Paula Trope, Adriana Varejão, Luiz Zerbini, Rochelle Costi, Paulo Nazareth, Thomaz Farkas.
