Monumenta 2011

Monumenta, the great artistic encounter celebrated in Paris and organized by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, has been inviting one international contemporary artist each year since 2007, the event's first year, to create a new art environment in the more than 145,312 ft2 Nave of the Grand Palais located in the French capital. For the 2011 edition held from May 13 to June 23, artist Anish Kapoor has been chosen to transform the exhibition space with the installation of a monumental sculpture in the interior of the Grand Palais. The piece measures 393.7 feet long by 114.83 high and consists of four gigantic dark-red semi-transparent spheres created with PVC. According to Kapoor, his work "will establish a dialogue with the architecture of the building in which it will be placed, so as to double the perspective, namely, the work being observed from inside and outside the building, creating the effect of the sculpture being larger that the space that contains it." Kapoor is regarded as one of the most influential sculptors in the world. His work stands out for the mastery in the handling of monumental scale pieces and for the colorfulness and sensuality these convey.
