MOCA Focus: Ana Segovia

Ana Segovia (born in Mexico City in 1991) challenges conventional notions of masculinity through a queer perspective in his lush paintings. Segovia challenges the gendered foundation of Mexican national identity, which is based on male stereotypes established by cinema, through the use of an aggressive neon color palette, bold compositions, and cinematographic framing and cropping.
To properly place his paintings in the exhibition space, the artist frequently creates unique display tactics for them by referencing the languages of installation, theater, dance, and video art. For MOCA Focus: Ana Segovia, in addition to two recent pieces of work, including I've Been Meaning to Tell You (2023), a suite of eight paintings that portray film stills from a nonexistent LGBT film that the artist wished he had seen in his early years, he will also have a new painting commissioned for the exhibition. Since the series' 2023 relaunch, this presentation will be the second MOCA Focus show. A catalog will be included in the exhibition. The Nimoy Fund for Emerging Artists supports publications.
MOCA Focus: Ana Segovia is organized by José Luis Blondet, Senior Curator, with Emilia Nicholson-Fajardo, Curatorial Assistant, and Anastasia Kahn, former Curatorial Assistant, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
