Million Dollar Plensa Sculptures Reside in Coconut Grove

International contemporary artist Jaume Plensa's series of three color-shifting resin figures, set atop 35-foot stainless steel poles, were installed mid November on the future site of the Residences at Park Grove in Coconut Grove (Miami). The famed Barcelona-based artist is one of the world's most celebrated creators of public art. The internally-lit figures, titled "The Three Poets (Body Soul God, Country, Water Fire)" positions the highly visible grounds of the enclave at 2701 South Bayshore Drive on a par with significant public art displays by Plensa across five continents. During the last 25 years, he has created site-specific sculptures for prominent outdoor spaces, from Canada to the Middle East. "We are thrilled to add to Miami's Bayfront landscape and to share such an important piece with the South Florida community," said Jorge Perez, chairman and CEO of The Related Group. "Elevated against the sky, the figures will create a beautiful, color-changing beacon that's visible from land and water." Park Grove partners Jorge Perez of The Related Group and David Martin of Terra Group purchased "The Three Poets," valued at just over $1 million dollars, from Galerie Lelong, New York. The piece was recently exhibited in Bordeaux, France. Plensa's figures are deliberately more generalized and are without reference to gender, race, or age--a common thread throughout the artists' practice. With their eyes closed, these figures will invite the viewer to take part in a contemplative, dream-like experience, albeit engaged and watchful. The light in this installation also speaks to the nomadic themes found throughout many of Plensa's sculptures; it traverses the shapes of the figures, and creates a space of reflection that can be felt universally. "I have always loved the Grove's understated sophistication. Jaume Plensa's mystical, thought-provoking sculptures are perfect fit for Park Grove and the surrounding community," said David Martin, president of Terra Group. Jaume Plensa was born in Barcelona in 1955. He has presented major solo exhibitions at numerous museums, including Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, United Kingdom; Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Bretton, United Kingdom; Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris; Kunsthalle Mannheim, Germany; Institut Valencia d'Art Moderne, Valencia; Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona; Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids, MI; The Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, TX; and Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Helsinki, Finland. In 2012 Plensa received the prestigious National Visual Arts Award of Spain. Plensa is also celebrated for his art within the public space, and in 2012 and 2013 he installed sculptures in Calgary, Canada; Rio de Janerio, Brazil; Bamberg, Germany, and at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York.
