The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has yet to announce a reopening date. It was announced that the Met Breuer would remain closed, the museum of modern and contemporary art that opened its doors in 2016 in the building designed by architect Marcel Breuer in 1966, on Madison Avenue at East 75th Street. The building previously housed the Whitney Museum of American Art.
The Breuer Building will temporarily host the Frick Collection, which will renovate its gilded age building to expand the exhibition space, this was an agreement made in 2018. However, the exhibition “Gerhard Richter: Painting After All” was open to the public for nine days, the Met Breuer, given the emergency measures, had to close early. Added to the economic crisis due to the institution’s million-dollar losses, as it was one of the first museums to close its doors temporarily.
“The Met Breuer will not reopen to the public this summer, and we will transition the Breuer Building to the Frick as planned,” a Met representative told Artnet News in an email. Frick will have access to the brutalist facilities from August but has not set a public opening date.
