The transatlantic retrospective Meret Oppenheim. My Exhibition is presenting the artist's outstanding œuvre spanning five decades.
Oppenheim is considered the most important Swiss woman artist of the 20th century and the leading representative of surrealism.
For the first time, the show reflects on Oppenheim's rarely researched work of the post-war years and reveals its affinities with contemporary art movements, such as pop art, nouveau réalisme, arte povera, and postmodern design. The exhibition clearly illustrates Oppenheim’s radically open concept of art, her rapport with the vibrant art scenes in Paris, Basel, and Bern as well as their significance for the phases of her artistic career.
The retrospective is a collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Menil Collection in Houston. It includes some 200 key works on paper, objects, sculptures, and paintings, and provides insight into, among other things, the world's largest museum collection of the artist's work at the Kunstmuseum Bern. Bern is the only station of the exhibition in Europe where it can be visited until February 13, 2022.
An exhibition of the Kunstmuseum Bern; The Menil Collection (March 25–September 18, 2022), Houston; The Museum of Modern Art, (October 30, 2022, through March 4, 2023), New York. Curated by Nina Zimmer, Kunstmuseum Bern; Natalie Dupêcher, The Menil Collection; Anne Umland, The Museum of Modern Art.
