On November 10th, the Chilean artist Felipe Mujica was awarded the second version of the Beca Fundación Actual 2020. In an intimate awards ceremony, the results were announced.
The jury made up of the artist Samy Benmayor; the artistic director of the Museo de Arte Moderno de Chiloé, Coca González; the director of MAVI, María Irene Alcalde; and the president of Fundación Actual, Pablo Gellona, announced the winner and 10 of the finalist artists: Felipe Carrión, Bruna Truffa, Víctor Castillo, David Corvalán, Claudio Herrera, and María Inés Schmidt – Timmermann.
In total, 149 applications were received from eleven regions of Chile. Actualcorp supports the Scholarship; and it is a project under the Law of Cultural Donations. Likewise, as part of MAVI’s programming, it is financed by the Ministry of the Cultures, Arts, and Heritage through its Other Collaborating Institutions Program (OIC).
The Production Grant consists of an economic contribution of ten million Chilean pesos distributed over 18 months and the possibility of holding an individual exhibition at the MAVI during July and August 2022, with a catalog publication.
Angélica Gellona, Executive Director of Fundación Actual, explains that “this Scholarship constitutes relevant support for middle-career visual artists. On the one hand, it provides an economic contribution to
allocating the production of work. On the other, it is an important recognition of the trajectory in a consolidation stage in an artist’s career. It is a unique initiative in our country, which has been very well received by the artistic world”.
María Irene Alcalde, executive director of MAVI, asserts: “The selection process had different characteristics from the first version since the jury quickly reached consensus. First of all, we must highlight the quality of the participants. Maybe this is always mentioned, but our participants are sincerely how we imagined when we created the contest. We believe that we have reached the niche that was our objective, and we are satisfied with it. Great artists, with great careers, others with not so extensive careers but with exciting and well-worked projects, in short, multiple options to choose the artist who managed to impose on others and others. The most difficult was the first selection, but from the beginning, the jury was able to agree on the projects that had the required characteristics: coherence, discourse, formal structure, extension towards the media, in addition to the trajectory of each artist”.
