Marina Abramovic, Princesa de Asturias Award for the Arts

The Serbian artist Marina Abramovic (Belgrade, 1946) was awarded on May 12 with the 2021 Princesa de Asturias Award for the Arts, as announced by the Fundación Princesa de Asturias.
In a press release, the jury highlighted, "Abramović's work is part of the genealogy of performance, with a previously unknown sensorial and spiritual component. It is charged with a will to permanent change; her work has endowed experimentation and searching for original languages with profoundly human essence. Abramović's courage in surrendering to absolute art and her adherence to the avant-garde offer moving experiences, which demand an intense bonding from the viewer and make her one of the most exciting artists of our time." The jury was composed of José María Cano de Andrés, María de Corral López-Dóriga, Dionisio González Romero, Blanca Gutiérrez Ortiz, Sergio Gutiérrez Sánchez, Lucas Macías Navarro, Ricardo Martí Fluxá, Fernando Masaveu Herrero, Hans Meinke Paege, Helena Pimenta Hernández, José María Pou Serra, Sandra Rotondo Urcola, Benedetta Tagliabue, Patricia Urquiola Hidalgo, Tadanori Yamaguchi, Aarón Zapico Braña, chaired by Miguel Zugaza Miranda, with Catalina Luca de Tena y García-Conde, Marchioness of Valle de Tena, acting as secretary.
After receiving the award, Marina Abramovic stated: "The life of an artist is not an easy task. It requires personal sacrifice, full dedication, and commitment to his or her work. The Princesa de Asturias Award is a great honor and recognition at this moment in my life and career. I am moved, honored, and proud to have received this prestigious award."
The Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts is endowed with a sculpture by Joan Miró, a diploma, an insignia, and fifty thousand euros.
The Princesa de Asturias Award for the Arts is the first of the eight prizes awarded each year by the Fundación Princesa de Asturias, which this year reaches its XLI edition. It will be followed by the Communication and Humanities Awards, on May 19; Social Sciences, on May 26; Sports, on June 2; Literature, on June 9; International Cooperation, on June 16; Scientific and Technical Research, on June 23, and Concord, on June 29 and 30.
