Maria Wills is the new director of Banco de la República’s Arts Unit and other Collections

Maria Wills, who in 2019 was the curator of Canada’s MOMENTA - Bienniale de l’image and winner of the Simon Bolivar Prize for Journalism in the category of “Criticism in the written press,” is the new director of the Arts Unit and Other Collections, of Bogotá’s Banco de la República.
Wills has both a Law degree and a master’s in History and Modern and Contemporary Art Theory from the Universidad de los Andes. Her main projects are related to the instability of the contemporary image and the revision of official art-historical accounts.
Among her most recent curatorial projects are “Urban Impulses” at the Photographers Gallery in London (2019) and “The Art of Disobedience” at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá (2018). She cocurated “Protographies” (with José Roca), a retrospective of Oscar Muñoz organized by the Museo de Arte Miguel Urrutia of the Banco de la República and hosted by the Jeu de Paume in Paris, the MALBA in Buenos Aires, and the MALI in Lima. Other shows of her authorship include “Fernell Franco-chiaroscuro” at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain; “Transitions” at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid (2016) and “Latin Fire: Other Photographs of a Continent” at PHotoESPAÑA (2015).
She previously worked for the Banco de la República between 2009 and 2014 as curator and head of temporary exhibitions, a time when she also organized outstanding projects and coordinated the latest installation of its permanent collection.
