Until June 12, the exhibition "María Teresa Hincapié. Si este fuera un principio de infinito" curated by Claudia Segura (MACBA Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona) and Emiliano Valdés (MAMM).
"María Teresa Hincapié. If this were a principle of infinity," is the first exhibition dedicated to the practice of María Teresa Hincapié (1954-2008), who specialized in "the poetics of the domestic" from performance. She transformed routine actions into symbolic acts to thus create a methodology in her practice. The artist had a particular definition of the performative, which she used to call "training."
With broad theatrical training, rigor, and great discipline, María Teresa Hincapié questioned the hyper-productivity of late capitalism, the unbalanced relationship with the planet, and the lack of meaning in a society dominated by consumerism.
María Teresa Hincapié's practice reflects the concerns of a woman of the late twentieth century who, with a self-taught education and a great sense of intuition and commitment, reformulated the course of Colombian art history. Despite situating herself at the juncture of several disciplines, the artist is an important figure in developing long-term performance, which would change the parameters of what was considered art in Colombia.
"María Teresa Hincapié. Si este fuera un principio de infinito" is structured along thematic axes that present some of the most important concerns or moments in her career: Preamble, Si este fuera un principio de infinito, Soy una mujer que ya no es una mujer, Hacia lo sagrado, Aldea-Escuela, Pies que lamen, Esta tierra es mi cuerpo, and Hincapié en diálogo.
This exhibition presents a vast selection of her works, archival material, photos, videos, written documentation, slides, visual testimonies, etc. Also included are works created by José Alejandro Restrepo to be interpreted by Hincapié and three projects commissioned specifically for the exhibition that opens an essential debate on movement, bodies, and legacy. The artists and collectives invited to develop a new work in dialogue with María Teresa Hincapié are: María José Arjona (Colombia), Coco Fusco (Cuba) and Mapa Teatro (Colombia).
This exhibition has been realized in collaboration with Casas Riegner, the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín (MAMM), and the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA); the exhibition will travel to the latter from October 20, 2022 - February 26, 2023. "If this were a principle of infinity" takes its title from the first performance by María Teresa Hincapié. She took all her belongings to the Teatro Cuba in Bogotá and inhabited the space for five days rediscovering the meaning of everyday life as a place of communion with herself and with the sacredness of existence.
