From September 15, 2023 through January 14, 2024, the Brooklyn Museum presents the monographic exhibition María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Behold.
The show features photography, installation, painting and performance, the result of more than four decades of the artist's work. Campons-Pons' early interests are explored along with the importance of the sensorial, the geographical and even some spiritual practices. Likewise, themes such as diaspora and memory are addressed, through her family history, where global histories of slavery and forced labor are analyzed.
Behold highlights the artist's dedication, her new modes of understanding, as well as her engagement with historical and contemporary challenges. Some of her most recognized themes are evident in practices such as performance centered on the symbolism of Yoruba Santeria and the artist's work with communities in Boston, Cuba, Italy and Nashville.
