The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR) is preparing to expand its horizons and achieve its institutional goals. On April 1, Dr. María Cristina Gaztambide took office as executive director.
Dr. Gaztambide assures that she will seek to expand the link between the Museum and the community with the support of its staff and its Board of Trustees. She will also seek to build new partnerships with local and international institutions to increase the reach and impact of the Museum's collection and projects and attract and cultivate new opportunities on and off the island.
Gaztambide earned an interdisciplinary doctorate in Latin American Studies with a focus on Art History from Tulane University; she is currently participating in the prestigious museum leadership program offered by the Center for Curatorial Leadership in New York. As part of her professional experience, she has served as a consultant and director of art projects in and outside of Puerto Rico; led several Puerto Rican and Latin American initiatives for the Smithsonian Archives of American Art (in Washington, Puerto Rico, and New York); served as associate director of the International Center for the Arts of the Americas at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston for over a decade; and, for the past five years, has been executive director and chief curator of the institution responsible for the University of Houston System's collection of art in public spaces.
