María Amalia García, MALBA Chief Curator

The Museo de Arte Latinoaméricano de Buenos Aires (MALBA) announced the appointment of María Amalia García (Buenos Aires, 1975) as Chief Curator of the museum, following the departure of Victoria Giraudo in November 2020.
María Amalia García will assume the position from June 1. She will be responsible for directing the temporary exhibitions program and integrating efforts to conserve, research, and disseminate the collection. She will also develop the academic content of the publications edited by MALBA and will collaborate in the development of online projects based on new research that will improve the virtual experience of visitors and their connection with the museum's collection. In the future, she will work as a team with the new director. This search will begin in the coming months to succeed Gabriela Rangel, who served as Artistic Director between 2019 and 2021. As part of her role, María Amalia García will also integrate the museum's Artistic Committee, which is currently formed by Gonzalo Aguilar (UBA-Unsam/ Conicet), Andrea Giunta (UBA/ Conicet), Adriano Pedrosa (MASP, Brazil), Julieta González (independent curator, Mexico) and Octavio Zaya (independent curator, Boston/Tenerife).
On her appointment, María Amalia García commented: "It is an honor to join as Chief Curator and continue the work carried out by admired colleagues. I am very grateful to join the MALBA team to contribute with my knowledge to deepen and diversify the readings of the works, the artists, and their contexts. The Argentine academic and curatorial circuit is recognized for its great professionalism; I am proud to be part of this community. On a personal note, my incorporation to MALBA has a special meaning: an important recognition of my career by the institution where I worked during 2002 and 2003 as curatorial assistant".
María Amalia García holds a Ph.D. and a B.A in Art History (UBA), is a professor and researcher at CONICET. She is a scholar in Latin American modern art: her lines of research propose comparative approaches, cultural networks, and regional interactions. She has served as associate curator at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires since 2014. In 2019, she was advisory curator for the exhibition "Sur Moderno: Journeys of Abstraction-The Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Gift," organized by Inés Katzenstein at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 2021, she co-curated with Marcelo E. Pacheco and Javier Villa "Alberto Greco: ¡Qué grande sos!" at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires. She is the author, among other books, of El Arte Abstracto. Intercambios Culturales entre Argentina y Brasil (Siglo XXI, 2011) translated into English as Abstract Crossings: Cultural Exchange between Argentina and Brazil (University of California Press, 2019).
