Luis La Rosa. First Prize - Biennial "Origins in Geometry."

Luis La Rosa (Caracas, 1972), a Venezuelan artist based in Miami, won first prize at the sixth edition of the "Origins in Geometry" Biennial, which opened on July 30 at The Museum of Geometric and MADI Art in Dallas, Texas. The award granted to his sculptural work Particle Accelerator, part of a series inspired by the experiments carried out at the CERN laboratory, located in Switzerland, where the behavior of subatomic particles of energy and matter is studied.
Luis La Rosa's practice updates the questions that quantum physics has established in the imaginary of our time. Although his works —paintings, sculptures, and installations— refer to the theories and efforts that try to explain and explore the cosmos, their configuration highlights the tensions that exist, in reality, between the highly sophisticated fields of technological knowledge and the shared human endeavor, invaded by the precarious.
Particle Accelerator consists of two identical sheets of laser-cut aluminum assembled in an "X" shape. La Rosa made them according to a geometric design in which parallel lines are inscribed, the voids of which he filled with synthetic resin. The plates are assembled in axial symmetry, which generates a formal and structural axis that suggests rotating mobility, emphasized by the specular reflection that the polished aluminum produces on all faces. The clean lines of the piece inscribe it within the abstract-geometric languages, but the narrative that sustains them creates contraposition from which interesting tensions of meaning emerge, establishing overlaps between a past that aspired to technological utopia and its verifications in the present.
The Origins in Geometry Biennial is an art competition created to recognize the excellence of visual artists whose practices update the languages associated with geometric abstraction. This edition brought together thirty-two creators from four continents, selected by the renowned artist Mokha Laget. The second prize was awarded to Adriana Dorta (Venezuela), and the third prize to Jeff Robinson (United States).
The Museum of Geometric and MADI Art is dedicated to researching and disseminating geometric art and is the only one specializing in MADI art and its outreach in the United States. The Biennial "Origins in Geometry" can be visited until October 24 of this year.
