A painter, sculptor and artist of engraving and drawing who stood out for his abstract works early in his career and has been a strong defender of abstraction, even though in several short periods of his life he worked with figurative images. He has the technical skill that reflects on his use of pigment, color and shape. The transparency effect accomplished by Hernández-Cruz with acrylic pigments seems to have been made with oil, a technique that has become a challenge to him since it implies an almost impossible duty. For his Circle of Art work at Museo de Arte de Ponce he chose an image and theme he has worked on since 2003 from the series Remansos, 2002-04, which he transferred to paper through a computer printing process called giclée. Landscape of the South, comprised of a series of stripes where blue and red claim superiority, is a work we can perceive as abstract. However, even though initially we see lines and shapes that respond to such an artistic trend, we can spot the sea and the horizon. In Landscape of the South, the stripe along the shore establishes a difference between the insinuated figurative image and the idea of the painting. This series, in spite of its strong colorfulness, becomes a quite and peaceful place. It is a work meant to be watched and which allows us to enjoy a Southern evening.
