Luis Enrique Zela–Koort Winner of The Mac Lima Art and Innovation Award 2022

The project Retorno Solar by Luis Enrique Zela-Koort, winner of the MAC Lima Art and Innovation Award 2022 will be presented until January 29, 2023. The exhibition focuses on the sun as a representation of everything that exists and has existed. Also, as an element that has been a witness and an agent of the events of the history of the earth and, therefore, of the human history.
Luis Enrique Zela-Koort (Peru, 1994) approaches his work by examining the technological responses to ideological prejudices. Thus, he deconstructs the possible relationships between culture and nature, as well as the instrumentalization of science and myth. His projects materialize in scenographic installations, integrating digital processes and manual methods where the pieces represent hypothetical objects and processes that conceptualize new realities. This highlights the interactions between the abstract and the construction of historical concepts and subjectivities. His work deals with ceramics, digitalization, bio-art, kinetic and interactive art. Zela-Koort studies different scientific theories, animation mythologies, philosophy, cyberculture, poetry, among others.
For this exhibition the installation proposes to recover the possibilities of what could and can be through the Sun, questioning the notion of progress and productivity and the necessary transformation to concepts such as culture, spirituality and diverse knowledge. This, taking into account the industrial situation, the extinctions and human activities that are evident in the environmental crisis. To propose questions about the anthropocentric and the limits and the consequences of human actions.
The works as a whole are articulated as the solar cycles, colors, changes, growths, brightness and perceptions, as all terrestrial transformations, respond to solar energy. At the same time the exhibition includes photochromatic paintings that are activated according to solar radiation, along with golden reliefs and serigraphs. On the other hand, there is a group of sculptures connected to solar tubes that crystallize reflections and propose a direct connection with the viewer's body. They are somehow perceived as altars of healing and contemplation that the viewer can access for their benefits. Finally, the installation includes two pools of spirulina on which are placed pieces that affirm the role of the sun as a biological nucleus and as a portal.
