AppointmentOctober 15, 2024

Lucía Sanromán, Chief Curator

The General Directorate of Visual Arts (DiGAV), under the direction of Tatiana Cuevas, has decided to appoint Lucía Sanromán as chief curator of the curatorial team of the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), effective November 4, 2024. This change comes in the context of the transition of Cuauhtémoc Medina, who has held this position since 2013 and who, after a period accompanying the transition, will rejoin the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas (IIE) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in January 2025.
This appointment of Sanromán not only represents a change in leadership but also marks a new stage for MUAC. The institution seeks to reaffirm its commitment to showcasing the most avant-garde and critical artistic practices, promoting the inclusion of diverse identities, and fostering a close relationship with the museum’s communities and audiences. Sanromán has stood out in her career for her focus on social and community art practices and her interest in works that reflect pluralities of identity and gender.
Before assuming her new role, Lucía Sanromán was director of Laboratorio de Arte Alameda since 2019; she has also been director of visual arts and general curator at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco (2015-2018) and co-curator of the SITE Santa Fe biennial in 2014. Likewise, she worked as an associate curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego between 2006 and 2011. Her experience and diverse approach indicate the direction MUAC will take under her leadership.
On the other hand, Cuauhtémoc Medina closes an 11-year cycle at MUAC, during which he has carried out a management marked by a cosmopolitan, but not colonial, perspective on contemporary art. His approach has been characterized by the intersection of historical research exhibitions, presentations of both local and international artists, and particular attention to artistic practices that are politically informed and representative of the art of the South.
Under his leadership, MUAC has established an extensive network of collaborations with institutions both in Mexico and abroad, and Medina has contributed to the museum's global prominence, being recognized for its prestige and cultural offerings.
