Vanishing Points

On July 4 Guest Projects opens its doors to Colombian Contemporary Art with the exhibition entitled Vanishing Points, curated by London-based Colombian curator John Ángel Rodríguez. This project reflects on the concept of creation as vanishing point. Rodríguez employs this term as a reinterpretation of the exercise of drawing and relies on post-structuralist philosophy, particularly the idea proposed by Gilles Deleuze: "we are moving continuously on parallel lines, while interacting with the surrounding environment. Although those lines may not have been connected from the starting point, they could eventually merge in the expansion of their coordinates. The fluxus between those lines is what generates a constant set of indeterminate possibilities." The curatorship also took into consideration for the selection of the works the particular phenomenon that emerged in Colombia during the last ten years, in which the participating artists, rather than emphasizing their own local experiences, have developed their research with the intention of introducing Colombian art to the international art scene. As part of this process, concepts are continuously evolving as new narratives pertaining to their local social circumstances emerge. Therefore, they are creating a new aesthetic that can be assimilated in diverse contexts and, as result, they are helping Colombian art to emerge away from its principal struggle and point of interest: the representation of political conflicts within Colombian society. The Vanishing Points exhibition brings together a selection of artists that have made significant and pioneering progress within the Colombian contemporary art scene. The exhibition unites a generation of art professionals that explore the visual and conceptual possibilities of drawing, ranging from site-specific installations to participatory education projects. Some of these artists are: Rodrigo Echeverri, Alberto Lezaca de Paz, Carlos Franklin, Nicolás Paris, Esteban Sánchez, Miler Lagos, María Fernanda Plata, Widy Ortiz, Nicolás Cárdenas, Andrés Londoño and Felipe Sepulveda. Guest Projects is an initiative spearheaded by Shonibare Studio to offer art professionals working in any artistic discipline the opportunity to submit their projects for consideration of a one-month exhibition. The space operates as a laboratory of ideas for emerging curators and artists with alternative projects.
