Lia D Castro, artist and intellectual, born in São Paulo in 1978, investigates the social relations of class, gender and race that arise in intimacy and vulnerability. The artist addresses the practice of prostitution and investigates different types of encounters to subvert the power relations and the violence that can emerge in these contexts. Lia D Castro questions issues such as masculinity, affection, care and responsibility that arise in this type of situation. Her work includes painting, engraving, drawing, photography and installations created together with other artists.
In “Lia D Castro: Em todo e nenhum lugar” (In everything and nowhere), one of the artist's most extensive series, Axs nossxs filhxs (To our children) is presented, characterized by collective decisions in the color palette and other elements such as the signature of the work. The use of the “x” in the original title in Portuguese alludes to the diversity of family structures and possible affective bonds, beyond those of consanguineous and heteronormative relations, as well as functioning as a tool that embraces different genders.
This is the artist's first solo exhibition in a museum; it includes 36 works made between 2013 and 2024, and records of her processes. The title arises from the historical absence of minority groups that have no access to positions of power and decision-making “nowhere,” but that confirm the workforce and the basis of society “everywhere.” D Castro aims to question this social stratification through dialogue and imagination.
The exhibition will be open to the public until November 17, 2024 and is part of MASP's annual program dedicated to LGBTQIA+ Diversity Stories, which includes exhibitions by Catherine Opie, Gran Fury, Leonilson, Mário de Andrade, MASP Renner, Queer Serigraphers and the group show LGBTQIA+ Diversity Stories.
