Leyla Cárdenas at Museo de Artes Visuales of the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano

The artist Leyla Cárdenas presents the exhibition "De volver se" (To Return) at the Visual Arts Museum of the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogotá until April 1. The exhibition includes sculptural and installation works that showcase the last 10 years of her artistic career.
Cárdenas' work explores concepts such as absence, memory, history, destruction and mutability. This is expressed through large-scale installations that make the notion of time perceptible. For this, the artist studies thoroughly antique buildings and their reconstructions as fragments that become materializations of the past. Her works are derived from research involving archeology, history and photography as sources of analysis, turning time into pieces that reflect on the present.
For this exhibition, the artist captures the perspective image of the small square of La Nieves in downtown Bogotá in an engraving, and an archive photograph of the same area; thus generating a mirror, and the encounter between two vanishing points, between the past and the present, recalling the history of the city. Likewise, the video Interpretación del Tiempo Profundo (Interpretation of Deep Time) (2017) the stratigraphy of a mountain on the outskirts of Bogotá is exhibited; from which the pass of time is reconsidered. Also, Especular (Speculate) (2017) a large-format silk installation with images of the entrance and exit of the Estación de la Sabana (Sabana Station) in Bogotá, appear like a ghostly presence that evoke the failed project of nation and confront the viewer from the moment of arrival. "De volver se" (To Return) rethinks destruction and recollection by narrating history in a profoundly poetic and aesthetic way.
