Leslie Sardiñas at the Times Square Visitor Center

Between May 4th and 7th, 2012, the Times Square Alliance, the Rockefeller Fund and the Fondo Artista Cubano will present a public video-art installation by Cuban artist Leslie Sardiñas. The installation will be on view on billboards in Times Square, along with a selection of drawings by the artist.

The show can be seen at the Times Square Visitor Center, 1560 Broadway Avenue, between 46th and 47th streets in New York City. Watching You! is a 30-second animation comprised of two eyes gazing downwards on Times Square. The animation is generated by 600 drawings by Sardiñas.

The well-trafficked Times Square area, host to tourists and business people from all over the world, will look at its passers-by; they will cease to be the observers and become the observed. Watching You! has been created in honor of the Cheshire Cat, an enigmatic character from Alice in Wonderland.

This is the first audio-visual work presented by the artist in public exhibition. Leslie Sardiñas was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1974. A graduate of the Academia Nacional de Artes Visuales in Havana, and a professor of design and animation, he developed his career in Europe. Sardiñas has exhibited internationally and his work is included in important collections.
