The Museo Nacional de Colombia presents Leo Matiz, mirando el infinito, a temporary exhibition. In 128 black-and-white photographs, this show brings forth the humanistic, post-avant-garde aesthetics of this photo-reporter born in Aracataca (Magdalena), considered one of the most versatile and unique representatives of the acclaimed generation of photo-reporters who renewed the photographic-arts scene in Colombia, Latin America, the United States, and Europe during the first six decades of the last century.
The exhibition, open through May 19th, develops several themes encompassing photographs of urban culture, water, land and the rural world, art and entertainment, portraits of Twentieth Century celebrities, as well as experimental, avant-garde, and surrealistic images produced by Matiz's quest for expression and his attempt to transform established visual codes, which resulted in unforgettable realistic and geometric compositions that break the mold of our habitual ways of looking at beings and things.
The exhibition is for the most part comprised of large prints originally made by the artist. Its communicating thread seeks to present the consolidation of styles and aesthetic concepts that dominated Matiz's visual work. In the context of the show, a catalog will be published and the Ministry of Culture will launch Leo Matiz, a documentary directed by Diego Samper, made with the support of the Leo Matiz Foundation.
