La Putica by Botero

On 6 November 2014 the Spanish police arrested three individuals involved in the theft of the painting titled The Putica (Little Whore) by renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Measuring 30 x 40 cm and painted in 1982 with the characteristic style of the artist, the work was stolen from a private collection in the Spanish capital on June 10, 2002. This year the Spanish authorities received information through Interpol about the activities of a gallery owner in Madrid who was advertising the sale of La Putica by its supposed owners. Based on the information received by the Interpol, an investigation performed by Spanish authorities led to a couple trying to sell the work to a Spanish gallery owner under the pretense that they had inherited the painting eight years back. Interested in the offer, the gallery hired a company specialized in finding stolen artworks. Despite being told that the painting appeared in their database as stolen, the gallery owner ignored the information. The investigation by the Spanish police led to the arrest of the couple that tried to sell the work and of an intermediary who gave the canvas to the couple to perform the scam. They were charged with possession of stolen property and fraud. Authorities also charged the Madrid gallery owner for not reporting the scam and instead attempting to make a deal with the offenders to collect the reward offered by the insurer. The Spanish police said that "during the course of the investigation it was learned that the work was exhibited in Singapore in September of this year and was bought for 87,000 euros" The work is currently owned by the insuring company that compensated the victim of the robbery with 137,736 euros.
