Police recover 81 works by Salvador Dalí in Málaga, Spain

Eighty one works by artist Salvador Dalí were recovered by the local police in the city of Estepona, in southern Spain, as the art thieves were planning to sell them. Although the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation has not yet confirmed the authenticity of the works, at least 12 of these ¿ belonging to a series ¿ appear to correspond with several pieces that had been stolen in Spain, Belgium, France, and the United States, according to Interpol documents. Also recovered were several supposed certificates of authenticity for sculptures attributed to the Catalonian artist. The group of works included a list with prices of the sculptures. The most expensive of these is the figure of a three-meter-high elephant. A French citizen was arrested following the police operation. He is allegedly responsible for the illegal introduction of the works into Spain. He was charged with falsifying documents and fraud. This is the 63rd person detained over the past several months as these arrests have been uncovering a black market in art in this town.
