Inhotim’s New Donation and New Governance

Starting June, Instituto Inhotim, a museum of Contemporary Art and Botanical Garden located in Brumadinho, Brazil, recently announced it would embark on a new phase in its history. The businessman, collector, patron, and founder of Inhotim, Bernardo Paz, is permanently transferring approximately 330 artworks belonging to his international contemporary art collection to the institution, including Inhotim’s 23 galleries and all the artworks on permanent exhibition, as well as the 140 ha area that encompasses the entire Botanical Gardens, featuring more than 4.3k plant species from several different continents.
Bernardo Paz’s donation spearheads the project Inhotim All and For All, whose mission is to strengthen the institution’s public vocation, and its role as a living museum, and its active collecting practice. Led by a new leadership team – Lucas Pessôa, Paula Azevedo, and Julieta González – who joined the institute in January 2022. The new structure aims to make the institution more open and inclusive and incrementally institutionalize the museum’s initiatives to secure its longevity, financial sustainability, the democratization of access, and the expansion of its artistic and social-educational program.
“The donation and the opening of Inhotim to society is a process that began much earlier when Bernardo generously decided to open his private collection to public visitors in 2006. Since then, there have been more than 4 million visitors in the last 15 years, as well as 800,000 children, young people, and adults who its social-educational programs have served. Therefore, despite being a private institution, Inhotim’s mission has always been a public one,” declares Lucas Pêssoa, President-Director.
“Inhotim was born out of a life project, which has been expanded over the years. The donation is the natural next step in this process. Inhotim is not mine, it is everybody’s,” declares Bernardo, the founder of Inhotim.
According to Julieta González, Artistic Director of Inhotim, “the donation will help Inhotim to become a more active museum, with a stronger public program, including more dynamic changes in the galleries, collaborations with partnering institutions, and a greater engagement between art and nature, and the surrounding communities.”
In line with Inhotim’s mission to integrate art and nature, Bernardo Paz’s Botanical Collection will be fully donated and incorporated into the institute.
