The retrospective exhibition of the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, curated by Lorenza Giovanelli and authored by Jorge Helf, runs through July 17 at Fundación Proa in Buenos Aires. The show presents an exhaustive territory of fundamental concepts and images to appreciate the art of the second half of the 20th century. The appropriation of public space, packing monuments, and transforming the natural space with their interventions, brings us closer to one of the most relevant trends in artistic practice.
The selection criteria of curator Lorenza Giovanelli responds to the desire to reflect the different stages of the artistic life of Christo and Jeanne-Claude from a series of documents that are representative of the magnitude of their installations for visitors from South America.
The selection forms a new and unprecedented look at the landscape and the most contemporary art. From their beginnings in 1958 with the first intervention proposals and evolving towards projects on a large public scale - whose purpose is art itself, in the artists' own words - the retrospective brings together the Early Works up to their latest projects. The collection of documentary photographs and the presence of the artists during the making of their interventions in a selection of documentaries gives the exhibition an extensive and comprehensive overview.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude is organized by Fundación Proa in collaboration with the Estate of Christo V. Javacheff and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry in Punta del Este. It is sponsored by Tenaris - Ternium.
