The Cintas Foundation announced the winner of the 2009 Emilio Sanchez Award in the Visual Arts

As every year in May, the Cintas Foundation announced the winner of the Emilio Sanchez Award. The award-winner this year was the artist Gladys Triana, who receives the scholarship for the second time; in 1993, the artist was awarded for the first time. As part of the scholarship award, Triana receives the prize money of US$ 15,000, established by the foundation in 2005. The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, at Florida International University and the Cintas Foundation announced the seven finalists on March 10. The list included Carlos Estévez, Tania Bruguera, Ivan Toth Unit, Carlos Ignacio Gonzalez-Lang, Cristina Lei Rodriguez, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova and Gladys Triana. On May 20, Cuba¿s Independence Day, the Cintas Fellows Exhibition opened in the Frost Museum with works by the finalists, and the prize was announced. This exhibit will be open to the public until August 23, 2009. The jury of this edition was composed of Alma Ruiz, Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Elvis Fuentes, Curator of the Museo del Barrio, New York; Rene Morales, Associate Curator of Miami Art Museum, Miami; Robert Storr, Dean of Yale University's School of Art, New Haven; and Gilbert Vicario, Assistant Curator of Latin American and Latino Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
