After an exhaustive study by academic researchers, the wood sculpture Head with Horns, owned by the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and thus far attributed to Paul Gauguin, was declared by the institution to have been created by an unknown artist, based on evidence that was not available at the time it was acquired.
Part of this evidence is an old photo album where the work appeared with another title.
The Head with Horns sculpture was acquired by the Getty Museum in 2002, presumably for an amount ranging between three and five million dollars. It remains an important work for the institution despite the fact that the piece still cannot be attributed to a particular author, and is currently the subject of an investigation whose final result will be published between 2021 and 2022.
