La Casa Encendida Presents Physical and Human Geography by Artist Anna Bella Geiger

Curated by Estrella de Diego and organized in collaboration with the Centro Andaluz de Art Contemporáneo (CAAC) and the Museo de la Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (MUNTREF) in Buenos Aires, the exhibition offers a comprehensive look into the work of Brazilian artist Anna Bella Geiger (Rio de Janeiro, 1933). The exhibition consists of approximately one hundred works, including videos, photographs, artist's books and photo collages that focus on the two fundamental themes contained in her work: physical geography and human geography. Through these two thematic lines and, most importantly, by relying on maps, a central element in her work, Geiger reflects on concepts like colonial policies, cultural stereotypes, marginalization, discourses imposed by hegemony and, particularly, the ways to explore such concepts through physically delicate works whose condition transforms them from political objects to poetic ones. From early on in her career, Geiger began working with collages and drawings, photo montages, video, photographs, artist's books, and installations. In 1954, she travels to New York where she takes courses and meets Henry Kahnweiler, a famous art dealer of the surrealists who becomes interested in her works and buys some of them. After her return to the United States in the 1970s, she enters into contact with personalities like Vito Acconci and Joseph Beuys. The exhibition showcases the subtlety of Geiger's work, her political commitment, and her peculiar subversion of chronologies. In sum, the show offers a physical and human geography in which the world must be rewritten and, once again, narrated with a very different gaze. Through the efforts of gallerist and institutions, today the work by Anna Bella Geiger is present in some of the most important museums and collections worldwide, like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Getty Collection in Los Angeles, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Tate Gallery in London; and, in Spain, in the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, the MACBA in Barcelona, and the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea (CGAC) in Santiago de Compostela.
