José Miguel García Cortés has been named as the new director of the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno for the next six years. The decision was made by a committee of experts charged with evaluating all candidates after Consuelo Císcar announced last March she was stepping down, effective in April, due to health reasons. The new Director holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Valencia, obtained with a dissertation titled "The 1970s in Valencia. The consolidation of individual languages and aesthetics in the visual arts." Since 1971 he has been a professor of modern and contemporary art at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia's School of Fine Arts. José Miguel García Cortés honed his experience in the management and direction of art centers as the Founding Director of the Espai d'Art Contemporani of Castelló, Director of the La Gallera gallery, and Coordinator of the Valencia Municipality's Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo. He has also published research such as Otras ciudades posibles (IVAM, 2012), Deseos, cuerpos y ciudades (2009), and Políticas del Espacio. Arquitectura, género y control social (2006). He is a member of the International Art Critics Association and the Valencian and Spanish Art Critics Association. Besides the academic and professional profiles, candidates for the position were required to be fluent in different languages. Fifteen candidacies were presented, out of which 5 finalists were selected for personal interviews with the committee. As the Valencia Culture Council explained, the decision was made after many hours of dialog and deliberation.
