MALBA, the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, opened the first exhibition in South America dedicated to John Baldessari, a pioneer figure of conceptual art in the United States. Organized in collaboration with the Craig Robins Collection and curated by Karen Grimson, the exhibition features 45 works, including paintings, photographs, and installations.
Entitled “John Baldessari: The End of the Line,” the exhibition traces the artist's career over 50 years, structured in four thematic groups. It highlights Baldessari's seminal works from the 1960s and 1970s, his use of text and photography in painting, and his exploration of the interplay between image and language.
The event marks a milestone by offering a comprehensive overview of Baldessari's artistic evolution, including original images of his seminal work “Throwing Three Balls in the Air to Get a Straight Line” (1973). In addition, MALBA published a catalog in Spanish and English that interprets Baldessari's works in detail from a Latin American perspective. The catalog includes essays by curator Karen Grimson and contributions by artists, offering an in-depth exploration of Baldessari's artistic legacy.
The exhibition at MALBA will be on view through November 18, 2024.
