Jesús Abad Colorado, Premio Gabo 2019's Excellence Award
Jesús Abad Colorado López, the photojournalist who for more than 25 years has captured the many faces of armed conflict in Colombia, is the winner of the Premio Gabo 2019’s Excellence Award
The Gabo Foundation, which gives the award, highlights in Jesús Abad Colorado’s career such values as a strong sense of ethics, respect for human rights, integrity and a commitment to journalism’s ideals of public service. It also notes that this photo-reporter deserves to be spotlighted as a referent for his colleagues and for the general public throughout Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries, as one of the great visual chroniclers of the region, whose work has made important contributions to a deeper knowledge and greater understanding of the past and the present of Colombia, and to the design of its future.
Every year, the Gabo Foundation’s Governing Committee rewards a journalist or journalistic team for their independence, integrity and commitment to journalism’s public-service ideals, and presents them as an example for their lifetime career achievement, or for an exceptional contribution to the search for truth or to the advancement of journalism. The members of the Committee are: Jean-François Fogel (France), Carlos Fernando Chamorro (Nicaragua), Germán Rey (Colombia), Héctor Feliciano (Puerto Rico), Jon Lee Anderson (United States), María Teresa Ronderos (Colombia), Martín Caparrós (Argentina), Mónica González (Chile), Rosental Alves (Brazil), Sergio Ramírez (Nicaragua), Leila Guerriero (Argentina), and Natalia Viana (Brazil).
The Gabo Foundation, formerly known as the Gabriel García Márquez Foundation for a New Ibero-American Journalism (FNPI in its Spanish initials), will celebrate the seventh edition of its Festival in Medellin, October 2 to 4. The ceremony for its various Journalism awards will be held there. Colorado will receive his award on October 3.
