On Saturday, October 28th, at the age of 93 the academic Jaqueline Barmitz died. A pioneer in conducting an exhaustive study of the history of modern Latin American art, as well as inserting it in the curriculum of the University of Texas in Austin, where she served as Professor Emeritus. The program has become the most internationally recognized institution in this area of knowledge. Jacqueline Essery Korkegi, born in Geneva, spent her childhood in various parts of Switzerland and Italy, between ten and seventeen, she and her family lived in Brussels. In 1941 a family holiday in the south of France suddenly became an escape from the German occupation, so she and her family took a boat to the United States, settling in New York. Trained as a portrait artist, she finally abandoned the portrait in favor of experiments with abstract expressionism. She was married to Walter Downing Barnitz, after her separation she kept her last name for professional reasons.
