Artistic Interventions in the work Fragmentos by Doris Salcedo

The Ministry of Culture of Colombia announces the opening of the call for the Creation Award to commission artistic interventions in the artistic project titled Fragmentos (Fragments) by Doris Salcedo. The deadline for entering all applications is October 3, 2018. The artistic project titled Fragmentos, to be presented in the month of November of this year in Bogota, will consist of the construction of floor in the new cultural annex for temporary installations of the Museo Nacional de Colombia. Doris Salcedo proposed the creation of this Counter-Monument (idea that emerged from the dialog between the work of art and contemporary architecture). It is conceived as a non-hierarchical place of encounter in which the emptiness and silence of the space will allow for listening to and acknowledging the violent experiences suffered by Colombians. In this manner, the work will be an entire floor constructed with melted and reconfigured weapons surrendered by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), and will serve as a physical and conceptual support on which this space for memory and encounter will be erected. For its creation, Salcedo will work with an interdisciplinary team that includes architects, engineers, technicians from the Santa Bárbara de Indumil weapons factory, and female sexual abuse victims. According to Salcedo, "Any persons who stand on this floor will find themselves in an equitable, balanced, and free position to remember the legacy of the war. This space aims at sheltering antagonistic memories with which to generate a polyphony of voices. The main purpose of art is to embrace multiple readings of the same event. And it is precisely there where the relationship between memory and art becomes an essential tool for building areas of contact or areas of encounter where Colombians can cohabitate." This is the reason behind the organization of this call. It will grant two participation awards to artistic interventions that address the armed conflict, the memory of the victims, and the construction of peace. These artistic interventions must be exhibited in the spaces and times designated for this purpose and must respect the integrity of the Counter-Monument. The mounting of the exhibition, packaging, insurance, and transportation of the works will be borne by the Museo Nacional de Colombia. Candidates interested in applying to participate in any of the categories, can make an appointment to visit Fragmentos by sending a request to the following email address: avisuales@mincultura.gov.co.
