The curatorial committee of the Arnold Bode Foundation and the Kassel city council, in its role as executive council of the Foundation, have decided to award the Arnold Bode Prize 2021, with 10,000 euros, to the “Instituto de Artivismo Hannah Ahrendt” (INSTAR) - Tania Bruguera.
“The INSTAR collective founded by the artist Tania Bruguera is committed to the processes of democratic transformation through artistic and discursive strategies. In its tradition, the Bode Award honors outstanding and long-term work and achievements. This year, the award will be funded by Kasseler Sparkasse and Sparkassen ‐ Kulturstiftung Hessen ‐ Thüringen. The time and space for the award ceremony will be decided at a later date.
INSTAR and Tania Bruguera will participate in the next documenta (documenta 15, 2022). According to the Board of Trustees of the Arnold Bode Foundation, the recognition of INSTAR’s risky work, which accompanies the award, cannot be overestimated in terms of the motivation it will inspire in artists. According to Bruguera, it also provides “enormous protection.”
The award has been given to artists since 1980, initially annually, after 1987 every two years. The award ceremony usually takes place in the Kasseler Kunstverein.
