From August 15 to December 31, the Cusco Art Biennial will be presented, which this year is called "Independence: Cusco Art Biennial. Bicentennial Edition" "Independencia" is part of the International Biennial Association as an associate member. The organizing institution of the Biennial "Independencia" is the non-profit association Patronato Cultural Cusco.
The theme of this first edition reflects on the Bicentennial of the Independence of Peru and Latin America through different artistic languages, academic and educational proposals. The Biennial has the Bicentennial Seal, granted by the Special Bicentennial Project (PEB) of the Peruvian Ministry of Culture.
The Biennial had to restructure its initial proposal to adapt to the new conditions imposed by the health emergency, which forced it to avoid everything related to the agglomeration of people (exhibitions in halls and museums, performing arts presentations in theaters, scholar events in auditoriums). They opted for two alternative forms:
-Digital format: a virtual platform for the presentation of artistic works; dissemination through social media; lectures, talks, and other online academic activities.
-Artistic works and interventions in open spaces (public and private) with wide access, or in closed spaces with the constant traffic of people; extensive use of projections on facades.
This option for non-conventional formats will counteract the negative effect of the pandemic on cultural life and will also help bring art closer to all sectors of the population. The projects and artists participating in this Biennial can be seen at:
