Santiago, Chile
Curated by the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC), the exhibition entitled Local Image attempts to contribute to the theoretical reflection and proactive debate centered on culture, globalization, and the development of consumption, as it also addresses the ways in which these factors are responsible for the most profound and violent changes society has experience in its history. According to Francisco Brugnoli, Director of the MAC, rather than attempting a historical summary of the art of today, the curatorship focuses on certain Chilean phenomena that is present in the works exhibited. "We began by establishing a conceptual framework that we coined 'the local image' and that speaks of the gaze that is particular to a generation of contemporary Chilean artists who have resented the changes the country has undergone. I am referring to the spread of globalization and the growth of consumerism." This exhibition includes works by both seasoned artists and young talents just out of art school. If we examine the age groups that are represented in this show, we can observe that it expands from 1957 (Jorge Brantmayer) to 1985 (Mariana Gallardo) and 1987 (Isidora Gálvez)¿the latter ones have just recently completed their art studies. The exhibition will remain open to the public until January 22 of 2012.
